For a long time, I wore mostly neutrals.
Black, navy, white and camel felt easy, timeless and safe. But as I have got older, I have actually become much more confident wearing colour.
I no longer think colour has to feel overwhelming or difficult to wear.
Instead, I have found that adding a few brighter pieces into an otherwise simple wardrobe can make outfits feel fresher, more modern and far more joyful.
The key for me is balance.
I usually choose one colourful piece and keep the rest of the outfit relatively simple.
These are the colours I find myself reaching for again and again.
1. Bright Pink Trousers
My pink trousers are one of the pieces that surprised me the most.
They feel feminine and cheerful, but because the shape is tailored, they still feel elegant.
I keep everything else fairly neutral and let the trousers become the focal point.
Ways I wear them:
• With a white V-neck vest and gold jewellery
• With a navy silk shirt and woven bag
• With a simple graphic T-shirt and white trainers
• With tan sandals and tortoiseshell sunglasses
Why it works:
Tailored shapes make bright colours feel more sophisticated.
2. Green Trousers
Green has become one of my favourite colours to wear.
It feels fresh and modern while still being incredibly versatile.
I particularly like pairing it with navy, cream and denim.
Ways I wear them:
• With a navy silk shirt and gold jewellery
• With a white linen shirt and green sandals
• With a graphic T-shirt and navy blazer
• With a cream blouse and woven bag
Why it works:
The richness of green feels elegant rather than overly bright.
3. Red Accessories
Sometimes colour does not have to come from clothing at all.
A colourful bag can completely change an outfit.
My red Coach bag and smaller red bag instantly make simple outfits feel more interesting.
Ways I wear them:
• With white jeans and a striped top
• With a denim skirt and graphic T-shirt
• With navy and cream outfits
• With Adidas Firebirds and a blazer
Why it works:
A small pop of colour feels easy and wearable.
4. Colour Through Accessories
I have also become much more confident using colourful accessories.
Sometimes all an outfit needs is one bright piece.
Pieces I love:
• Yellow clutch
• Blue clutch
• Green sandals
• Silk scarf tied onto my woven bag
These little touches make neutral outfits feel much more personal.
Why it works:
Accessories allow you to experiment with colour without committing to an entirely bright outfit.
5. Colour Feels More Elegant With Neutrals
One thing I have learnt is that colour often feels easier to wear when paired with timeless basics.
I particularly love combining brighter pieces with:
• White denim
• Navy shirts
• Linen pieces
• Denim skirts
• Camel tones
The neutral pieces help anchor the outfit and stop it feeling overwhelming.
My Simple Formula For Wearing More Colour
I now follow a very simple rule:
One colourful piece.
Everything else remains fairly simple.
This could mean:
• Bright trousers with a white top
• A colourful bag with a navy outfit
• Green sandals with linen pieces
• A silk scarf added to a neutral outfit
Colour should feel fun, not stressful.
Final Thoughts
Turning 40 has actually made me more confident with colour rather than less.
I am much less worried about whether something is "too bright" or whether it stands out.
Instead, I focus on whether I feel happy and comfortable wearing it.
For me, colour brings personality into my wardrobe and keeps classic pieces feeling fresh.
Sometimes the smallest pop of colour can completely transform an outfit.
And often, those are the outfits I end up wearing the most.
